Studies on the anatomy of fruits of pepper (Piper nigrum L.) and false pepper (Schinus molle L.)
Ulvi Zeybek
Pepper is known since ancient times as an economically important spice. Many additives are being mixed up with pepper sold in Turkey. The main ones are starch, bread and sediments of olive, vis-à-vis the grounded walnut, hazelnut shells and false pepper fruits.

It has been reported that the red fruits of S. terebinthifolius Raddi used as a spice in some parts of America; cause lesions inside the mouth. Some of the species belonging to the family Anacardiaceae cause allergical dermatitis too, because of the presence of n-Alykylphenolic compounds. As much, much work has been done on the chemical constitution of S. molle and S. terebinthifolius.

The anatomy of the fruits of pepper and false pepper has been investigated in the present study.

The fruits of S. mollle mixed up with the pepper fruits or their powder can be easily distinguished micros copically. Keywords : Pepper, Piper, Schinus
