Amanita species in Turkish macrofungus flora
Afife Mat
Amanita (Amanitaceae) is a woodland genus distributed almost all over the world. It includes about 60 species. Some are edible, like A. caesarea, others are poisonous and hallucinogenic, like A.muscaria and A.pantherina even lethal, like A.verna , A.virosa and A. phalloides (1,2). The latter is growing widely in the northern region of Turkey including Istanbul forests. It has been responsible for many cases of poisoning during revent years (3). Their chemical investigations have been the subject of many publications since last century.

According to literature records and our orn collections, 16 species of Amanita currently occur in this Turkey. Short descriptions and their distribution in are given here. Descriptions are based on the literature (1,4 -7) and on the examination of specimens held in ISTE (Herbarium of the Faculty of Pharmacy of Istanbul University).

The species cited are as follows 1- A. caesarea (Scop.:Fr) Quél. (8-14), 2- A.citrina (Schaeff.)S.F. Gray (16-20), 3- A.cofinae (Maire) Singer (8, 12, 17), 4- A.gemmata (F.)Gillet (Syn A.junquillea Quél.) (10,22-24), 5- A.muscaria (L.: Fr) Hooker, (3,10,14,16, 18-20, 22,30) 6- A.ovoidea (Bull.:Fr) Quél, (8, 12, 31-33), 7- A.pantherina (DC:Fr.) Secr (3, 8, 13, 15,18), 8- A.phalloides (Vail.:Fr) Secr (3,8, 26-18, 20), 9- A.porphyria (Fr.) Secr. (8), 10- A.rubescens (Pera.:Fr.) S.F. Gray (8, 14, 17, 19, 37), 11- A. spissa (Fires) Kummer (Syn A.excelsa (Fries) Kummer) (14,17,19, 38), 12- A.solitaria (Fr.) Quél. (39), 13- A.vaginata (Bull.:Fr). Vitt. (8, 23,37, 40-42), 14- A.valens Bull.:Fr (37), 15- A.verna (Bull.:Fr) Lamarck (3, 18, 20, 33, 38), 16- A.virosa Lamarck (37,41).

Six species of Amanita are represented in macrofungal collection of ISTE : A. caesarea, A.citrina, A. muscaria, A.pantherina, A. phalloides, A. verna. They come from the European and Asian parts of Istanbul.

Interest in Turkish macrofungal flora is increased during the last years. Mycologic investigations are carried on by university biologists. Publications on poisonous mushrooms and poisoning cases are however scarce (33-36, 44-48). Chemical researches on poisonous fungi started in Turkey in 1990 at the Department of Pharmacognosy, Faculty of ,Pharmacy of University Istanbul (49). A list of pıblications related to Turkish microfungi apeared in 1994 (43). Keywords : Amanita (Amanitaceae) is a woodland genus distributed almost all over the world. It includes about 60 species.
