The lead and cadmium contents of various tea samples
Ömer Ersoy,Bertold Boppel
In this study, the lead and cadmium contents of various tea samples were determined either directly or after brewing, in the tea decoctions and in the leaf residue by flame atomic absorption spectrophotometry. The range of the metal contents of various tea samples (n=15) were 0.371-3.330 mg/kg for lead and 0-0.092 mg/kg for cadmium, and of the tea decoctions 0.001-0.004 mg/kg for lead and <0.001 mg/kg for cadmium. In this study, it has been shown that during brewing the great portion of lead (90±5%, n=15) stayed at the leaf residue and the little portion was extracted (10±6%, n=15) into the brewing solution. For cadmium the distribution is found to be somewhat the same but not as stable as in lead (64±25%, 34±22%, n=14). Our results show that, the contribution of the tea beverage to daily intake of lead and cadmium is not very notable even with the samples having relatively high levels of this metals. Keywords :
