Percutaneous absorbtion: an overview of the biological mechanism
The skin which is the largest organ of the human body is an important drug delivery route. Drugs can be applied to the skin for local or systemic therapy. The absorption of the applied drug is seen through the epidermis layer, hair follicles or the ducts of perspiration glands by passive diffusion. There are several factor influence the percutaneous absorption such as the properties of the skin and drug or the type of the ointment formulation.
In this review, the biological mechanism and a mathematical description of the percutaneous absorption was given and some of the factors about the skin were investigated.
