Phytochemical investigation of Daphne pontica L
Daphne pontica L. (Thymelaeaceae) is a widespread plant in Turkey. A survey in literature showed that various Daphne species have been studied and flavonoids, coumarins, steroids and triterpenes have been isolated and identified. However, there are only a few papers on D. ponica L. The plant material was collected from Bolu and some preliminary chemical investigations have been carried out on the plant such as moisture, total ash and volatile oil assays. The crudely powdered D. pontica L was first extracted with petroleum ether and then with chloroform and ethanol. The results obtained by thin layer chromatography showed that petroleum ether and chloroform extracts contained the same substances and were combined. We proved that the crystalline substances obtained from these extracts were α- amyrine acetate, α- amyrine and β- sitosterol by chromatographic controls, melting point determinations and IR methods as well as standard sample comparison, which we have made.
