Determination of ethylene oxide residues in plastic medical devices manufactured in Turkey
Ethylene oxide residue levels in disposable syringes manufactured in Turkey have been determined. In residue analyses, exhaustive extraction and simulated- use extraction methods have been applied to extract ethylene oxide adsorbed on plastics materials. After oxiding to formaldehyde by periodate, residual ethylene oxide has been determined colorimetrically by measuring the absorbance of the coloured reaction product with chromotropic acid. The factors which affect the radiation and the ethylene oxide sterilization techniques have been compared. Considering serious problems whşch appear in ethylene oxide sterilization, it has been concluded that the radiation process in reliable alternative.
